Wisdom Of the Fathers

Striking at a Shadow

He [or she] who lives virtuously cannot be injured by any hardship or be deprived of their inward pleasure. For being supported by favorable hopes, nothing will be able to throw [the Christian] into dejection. What is there that anyone can possibly do to cause the noble-minded Christian to become sorrowful? Take away his [or her] riches? He has his wealth in the heavens! Cast him out of his country? He will take his journey to that City which is above! Bind him with chains? He still has his conscience free and is insensible to external chains! Put his body to death? Yet he shall rise again! And just as a person who fights with a shadow and beats the air will be unable to hit anyone, so also is the person who is at war with the just person, for he is but striking at a shadow, and wasting his own strength, unable to inflict any injury upon him.

~ Saint John Chrysostom
